836th Hamburg Port Anniversary in 2025

28.05.2025

From 9 to 11 May 2025, Hamburg celebrated the 836th anniversary of its port with a spectacular festival on land and at sea. Around one million visitors flocked to the Hanseatic city to experience the world's largest port festival.

The festivities began on Friday with the traditional arrival parade. Over 250 ships, including impressive tall ships such as the Alexander von Humboldt II and the Polish Dar Młodzieży, as well as modern naval vessels, sailed past the Elbphilharmonie and the Landungsbrücken, thrilling spectators along the Elbe.

One of the highlights of the festival was the unique tugboat ballet on Saturday. Between 3:45 and 4:25 p.m., tugboats with up to 3,000 horsepower performed an impressive choreographed routine to classical music directly in front of the Landungsbrücken. This spectacle, which is unique in the world, attracted numerous visitors.

The musical programme offered something for every taste. Artists such as Nina Chuba and Johannes Oerding performed on the floating stage. Scenes from the musical ‘MJ – Das Michael Jackson Musical’ were also presented. The Saturday evening was rounded off with a large fireworks display over the Elbe.

Harbour Pride has been an integral part of the Port Anniversary since 2014. In 2025, the queer community once again invited people to the fish market on Sunday to demonstrate for diversity and tolerance under the rainbow flag.

On Sunday, the participating ships bid farewell to Hamburg in a ceremonial departure parade between 6 and 7 p.m. The ships sailed down the Elbe like pearls on a string, offering spectators an impressive sight.

The ‘Bunte Hafenmeile’ (Colourful Harbour Mile) stretched along the Elbe and offered a varied entertainment programme with over 400 showmen, arts and crafts, fairground rides and culinary delights from all over the world. From Friday to Sunday, the mile was a popular meeting place for young and old alike.

The 2025 Port Anniversary once again demonstrated what makes Hamburg so special: the close connection between tradition and modernity, cosmopolitanism and a sense of home, harbour flair and joie de vivre. Whether majestic windjammers, dancing tugs or rousing music – this maritime spectacle moved hearts and broadened horizons. Anyone who has been there once will come back again.

When the sun sets over the Elbe, the sails rustle and music fills the streets, it becomes clear that the harbour is not just a place – it is a heartbeat. A feeling of arrival and departure at the same time. And anyone who has ever been part of this moment will carry it with them forever.
