Storm Elli greets Hamburg in 2026

03.02.2026

Winter arrives in the most beautiful city

The year 2026 started with a surprise for the people of Hamburg: in the first few weeks, we were hit by a massive winter storm! Despite the freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, many people were out ice skating, sledging or simply enjoying the beautiful white landscape. However, the winter conditions not only turned the daily lives of residents upside down, but also had a noticeable impact on supply chains and Germany's most important port.

Effects of the prolonged frost

A rare natural spectacle occurred on the Elbe: after prolonged snowfall and days of persistent frost, metre-high icebergs formed as the river water froze in large quantities at sub-zero temperatures. Apart from the water, the snow also caused problems on land. Port terminals and container depots had to suspend operations for days for safety reasons. There was only greatly reduced capacity for container deliveries and pick-ups, and handling processes were slowed down considerably. The situation was no easier on the roads, which were covered with a layer of white snow and extremely slippery. Rail transport was also significantly restricted.

Direct consequences for container imports and transport

The effects of the prolonged frost resulted in delayed handling of import containers, ships remaining at the quay for longer periods and storage areas reaching full capacity. Some container ships even stopped calling at the port of Hamburg altogether.

Processes that are otherwise very time-sensitive, such as the collection of empty containers at the terminal, had to wait. Apart from the delayed availability, this can also lead to high storage costs in the worst case. In other words, the transport and handling of containers came to a standstill in Hamburg for several days at the beginning of January.

Conclusion

Winter weather has a major impact on import supply chains and can cause economic damage due to delays. Even though Hamburg has historically experienced few extreme winters, as a central business location, we too must be prepared for extreme climatic situations in the future. Prevention, such as timely communication between all economic stakeholders, and flexible solutions, such as winter services, are crucial in this regard.
